Tee it Up to Cancer

October 5, 2011

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (October 4, 2011) –The University of Sioux Falls Golf program will team up with the Susan G Komen for the Cure South Dakota and “Tee it Up to Cancer” in effort to raise breast cancer awareness and the funding of cancer research. Set for Oct.10-11, the invite will serve as USF’s annual fall home event and be held at the Westward Ho Country Club. USF welcomes all donations or pledges as 100% of the proceeds will be donated in the in the name of the 2011 Cougar Invitational.

USF head golf coach Jenny Coluccio explained how they came up with the idea. “The Women competed in Concordia’s Wildwood Lodge Invitational where they dedicated the first round of play to raising cancer awareness and funding to research for a cure. Most of us have either known someone or have been personally affected by this awful disease and our golf family is no exception. This is an opportunity for USF, the Susan G Komen Foundation and the community of Sioux Falls to take part in the fight against cancer.”

Over the last week, USF golfers have challenged one another to see which golfer can raise the most money. They will be taking both donations and pledges for the tournament, giving family and friends the opportunity to make a one-time donation or pledge a certain amount based on their tournament play (i.e. for each birdie, par or eagle that golfer makes during the weekend). The challenge was also extended to the Universities planning to compete in the Cougar Invitational.

“With it being breast cancer awareness month, we thought this would be an excellent event to promote education and action,” Said Susan G Komen South Dakota executive director, Amanda Anderson. “We aim to support and provide any resources we can to both patients and their families. Initiatives such as Tee it up For Cancer, give us the opportunity to communicate with the community and increase awareness.”
